Newport, TN — Thursday morning’s heavy rains caused serious flash flooding in several parts of Cocke County, and it turned deadly for one local woman.
According to authorities, 64-year-old Teresa Diane Young from the Centerview area was swept away by floodwaters near her vehicle early Thursday. Her body was later recovered.
The heavy downpour hit fast, especially around Bybee, Parrottsville, and Centerview. Water came up quickly, forcing multiple water rescues throughout the morning. State Route 160 was shut down in places, and several back roads flooded over.
Some folks in Parrottsville said the flooding reminded them of what happened during Hurricane Helene last year. First responders stayed busy most of the morning helping people get to safety.
As of Thursday evening, the rescues are over and people have been allowed back into the affected areas. Officials are reminding everyone to stay away from flooded roads and creeks.
This was the first weather-related death in Cocke County since last year’s big flood.
