WEATHER ALERT: Update July 13th 1:52 am Flood watch has been extened until 8:00pm Tuesday July 13th. Please stay alert for rising water around creeks and streams.

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. – Following Saturday’s devastating flash flooding in Del Rio and other parts of Cocke County, the National Weather Service has extended a Flood Watch for the area until 2:00 a.m. EDT Monday.
Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected tonight, and officials warn that areas impacted by yesterday’s flooding are especially vulnerable to renewed flooding if heavy rain develops.
According to the National Weather Service, excessive rainfall could lead to additional flooding of creeks, streams, rivers, low-lying areas, and flood-prone roadways. Saturated ground from Saturday’s storms means it will take much less rainfall to create dangerous conditions.
Residents in Del Rio and other areas that experienced flooding should remain alert throughout the evening and overnight.
Safety Reminders
- Never drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow moving water can sweep away a vehicle.
- Stay away from creeks, streams, and low-water crossings during heavy rain.
- If you live in an area that flooded yesterday, be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions worsen.
- Continue to monitor weather alerts and local emergency information.
Emergency officials will continue monitoring conditions overnight, and Newport Journal will provide updates if additional warnings or road closures are issued.
If you experience flooding in your area, have road closure information, or safely capture photos or videos of storm damage, please send them to Newport Journal through Facebook Messenger or our Submit a Tip page.
